Found sometime to write, however not my usual amount of time to do a Ruby x Male Reader episode, so I thought I'd give you a quick off-the-top-of-my-head good old oneshot reguarding D.VA from Overwatch. This one is a bit more implied as I may want to come back to the story later (I know that defeats the purpose of a oneshot but I'll change the title if I do decide to come back to this, or you guys want me to come back to this, either is good enough for me). So without further ado:
(Y/n) - Your name
(L/n) - Last name
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You sigh as you continue to cross names off your list. You, Captain (Y/n) (L/n) have been tasked with the job of finding someone to pilot the new MEKA recently brought to Overwatch as a gift from South Korea for doing a great job for continuing to hold back the omnic advances. So far your searches have been fruitless though and the first few classes of volunteers weren't up to scratch. You would much rather be out on the field and doing something more productive but Commander Morrison made it very clear that you're in no mental state to continue as you were and gave you a task, so you obey it. As much as 'I don't take orders from anybody, I'm toooooo coooool' is relatively accurate for you, Commander Morrison has done so much for Overwatch that you have enough dignity to respect his descision. However, it appears that decision is a lot more exasperating than he let on.

(Y/n): And your name?

???: Hana Song, also known as D.VA the best streamer in the world! (throwing punches into the air to prove her point)

(Y/n): (unamused) Riiiiight, the gamer. (sigh) And what skills do you bring to the table that will give you an edge against your contenders? (quietly) Not that there are any

DVA: I'm well versed in flying simulators, piloting that MEKA will be a piece of cake!

(Y/n): (sarcastically) I'm sure video gaming skill will exchange to piloting an actual real life robot of death. Let's get you to the training grounds.

------------
DVA: (confidently) So, how did I do? And if we get to choose, I would like my MEKA to be pink with a rabbit on it

(Y/n): Well, let's start from the top, your cardio's appauling, your staminia is woefull and your overall attidude to the job you're about to take on as well as respect to your higher ups is atrocious.

DVA: (confused and angry) Wha?! What do you mean, attitude! I don't have an attitude! If anyone has an attitude it's you, ya monotone, cranky, monkey!

(Y/n): Precisely my point. (flipping over his sheet and getting rather annoyed) However...

DVA: (lighting back up) However...?

(Y/n): (thinking about it but then putting his sheet down) However nothing, nevermind

DVA: No, don't give me that! You said however and that means I did something right, so spit it out!

(Y/n): (looking into her eyes that were originally filled with overconfidence but now with a hint of desperation and a want to pilot the MEKA) Fine, your evasive manuevers, firing accuracy and control of the MEKA are exceptional. With anyother person you'd get the position. However I am not anyother person, you may think I'm being harsh but what I want is someone who not only has the skill but also the heart and will to put themselves in harms way to protect the innocent, I unfortuneately do not see that in you. I regret to inform you that you have not got the position. (starts to walk away)

DVA: ...Wait

(Y/n): Look, I'm sorry but-

He turns around to see DVA, staring at him defiantly but also with tears in her eyes.

DVA: I want to protect people, I want to help. I was being stupid before because I thought that if I acted confidently I'd impress you. That might seem silly but I was just nervous. I want to prove to the world that I'm not just some streamer, that I'm someone who will stand up to the challenge and help my country from the terrible crisis going on at the moment. Give me another chance, please.

(Y/n): (looking indecisive but shaking his head and coming up with a decision) ... My thoughts are final. Sorry, no do overs. (reluctantly walks away as DVA looks at the captain in tears as he disappears from view)

------------
(Y/n) sits in his desk chair in his new office, looking over the various portfolios of volunteers. With your recent transfer to the paperwork side of Overwatch you were given a brand new base of operations to carry out your new duties. Not that you wanted to, you'd much rather keep your old desk. You sigh and look at a photograph framed nicely on top of your desk and get up to get some coffee. That is until your phone starts to ring.

(Y/n): Hello?... She's here again?!... That's been every day for the last week!... (sigh) no don't tell her to leave, I'll see her this time... Thanks, bye

After a short while, a brown-haired Korean girl opens the door to (Y/n)'s office and slowly steps in.

(Y/n): Quite persistent, aren't you?

DVA: (slightly angry) Look, I've been trying to get a hold of you for a while now and... (becoming a little nervous) I'd like to apologise. I'm not here to ask for another chance, nor am I here as DVA. I'm here as Hana Song. I uh, did some research about you. I heard about how much you have lost. I came into that try-out childish, uneducated and lacking the understanding of what it means to be a member of Overwatch. I formally apologise and hope you forgive me. (gives a deep bow and goes to leave)

(Y/n): ...Wait

DVA: (surprised) Hmm?

(Y/n): I apprechiate the thought gone into this and I apologise for not seeing you sooner. You may have messed up big time on first impressions, and I did say no do overs so I'm kind of contradicting myself... But what you've shown me today is that you have matured, and I can work with that. (handing a piece of paper over to her) Now before you get excited, this is not a garenteed contract, it is more of a trail. You will be working with me and improving your skills for 3 months, after that time I will give you a final evaluation. You understand?

The popular streamer freezes up as she takes in all the information that was just given to her. After that happens, a wave of realisation hits her and she jumps up and down excitedly before hugging a now very surprised Captain.

DVA: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! I promise I'll work hard and I won't let you down. I'll start getting ready now! (rushes out the room)

(Y/n): (shouting after her) Hey wait! (realising she's not coming back for a while so defeatedly) You have to sign this form...

------------
The last three months of training was surprisingly productive and you were impressed at Hana's tenacity and work ethic. You come into the lunch hall refreshed and slightly optimistic, something you haven't felt in a while. As you approach the queue Commander Morrison notices you and motions you over.

(Y/n): (saluting) Commander! An honour to speak with you sir

Morrison: Good to see you too soldier. At ease. I heard you finished the assignment I sent you in finding an upcoming promising piolet to fly our newly acquired machines. That's good news, I assume you're ready to move on.

(Y/n): (looking over to DVA sitting on her own at a table) Um, not yet sir. I believe it would be wise if I stayed beside her for a bit longer, in order to further condition her into a great asset for Overwatch, if you'd let me of course.

Morrison: I have no quarrels with that. I'm sure she'd be delighted to hear that the youngest person to be ranked Captain would be working with her for an extended period of time. I'd love to stay and chat but duty calls. However, I spoke with some other higher-ups and they have agreed to let you come back onto the field, whenever you feel ready of course. Just give me a call and I'll sort you out, now if you'll excuse me (walking off)

I nod your head in astonishment. You've always had a weird relationship with the commander. Not in a bad way of course but it seemed he had taken a liking to you as early on as your try-outs and it only increased when you worked your way up to Captain. Whether it was your devotion and loyalty, or talents on the battlefield, Commander Jack Morrison has always been in your corner and you thank him greatly for that. He's been a mentor figure and you think it's about time you do the same with DVA. You walk over to her table and sit opposite her.

(Y/n): (sarcastic and casual) I see you're fitting in nicely

DVA: (slightly embarrassed) Sh-shut up! Besides, the only person I've talked to around my age un my department so far is you, so I don't particularly fit in that well

(Y/n): If it's any consolidation, I was a lot like you when I first joined. But I grit through it and became a Captain... even made friends along the way... you'll do fine!

(Y/n) attempts to laugh off the matter when he brought up the subject of friends but Hana could obviously see the sadness and guilt in his eyes.

DVA: (getting up from her seat) Come on

(Y/n): (confused) Where are we going?

DVA: Just stop asking questions and come already!

(Y/n) continues to protest so DVA grabs his hand and continues walking. (Y/n) continues to question but never shows any more signs of resistance and allows himself to walk hand in hand with DVA.

(Y/n): Could you at least tell me where we're going?

DVA: (stops and turns around) Okay, if you really want to know. I have been thinking this over for a while now, something to give you in order to thank you for all you've done for me

(Y/n): You really didn't need to do this you know

DVA: But I did, I believe it will help you in the long run as well

Time Skip
------------
(Y/n): ...Hey, Hana? I don't think I want to do this...

DVA: Come on, you were fine before, why is it now that you're having second thoughts?

(Y/n): Because I didn't think I'd actually be doing this. I-I... don't think I can stand in front of them, especially for what I did...

DVA: But you did nothing wrong, that is what you need to know and is why you need to finally let this sadness in your mind go

(Y/n) for the first time the entire way, breaks his hand free from Hana's grasp and stands defiantly at her, tears starting to form in his eyes.

(Y/n): Look, you weren't there so you don't know! I... I failed them. We were supposed to be a team, fight together... die together. And yet here I am! Standing on my own two feet while there stuck six feet under. The only reason I've never been to their graves is because I can't bare to look at them. It'll only bring back up the feelings I've been trying to keep hidden for years...

(Y/n) looks down at the ground, before turning to walk the other way. That is until DVA stops him. She turns him back around, wipes the tears away from his face and cups his right cheek with her hand. Though she has to stand on her tip-toes to reach your height she still keeps this sign of seriousness.

DVA: I can't stop those emotions. What I can do is try to get you to understand that the only way you have failed them is by not moving on. They died to keep you alive so their legacy could live on. Their sacrifice and their commitment to Overwatch can only be remembered if you tell it to people. You're right when you say I wasn't there, so I can't know. But I can if you tell me. Stand in front of those people who you cared so much about and prove to them that their sacrifice was not in vain. Do them proud. Do this for me, please.

(Y/n) thinks for a moment, before nodding his head.

Time Skip
------------
It was a quiet, somber moment and though it only lasted a short while, to (Y/n) it felt like years. At first, apology and regret, eventually acceptance and hope for the future. The graves were worn down and nature tried to claim them as its own, but with a short while of cleaning and the flowers DVA brought with her, (Y/n)'s friends were laid to rest in peace, finally.

(Y/n): ...Thanks, truely. I needed that

DVA: Don't mention it... Now, what do you say you join me in meeting Mei down at the cafe shop for a drink, it'll get your spirits up!

(Y/n): Thank you for the offer, but I'm going to have to pass. However, speaking of passing, it is round about that time where I give you your final score.

DVA: Aaaannnddd?

(Y/n): (smiling) You passed with flying colours

DVA: (overjoyed) Wwwoooo! I'm number 1, I'm number 1. (hugging (Y/n)) Thanks, I couldn't have done it without you. (realisation) Wait, does that mean you'll be going back to your old position? Meaning I won't see you that often anymore?

(Y/n): Normally that would be true, but I talked it over with one of my Commanders and he said it would be fine if I continued to work with you. If you want to that is

DVA: Is that even a question? I wouldn't be where I am if it weren't for you, of course I want you to stick around!

(Y/n): That's great then, I'll see you later Hana

DVA: See you later (Y/n)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wasn't that quite nice, anyway, I'm sorry if I didn't portray DVA how she normally is, but I tried. Now, with this oneshot completed I will see you guys when I see you guys, next time. Captain over and out.
